It was weird having an unmarked police car tail me through my day. I had three resurrections lined up back-to-back in the afternoon, mercifully two were at the same hospital morgue, and I had an hour in between to grab a coffee and sandwich at the hospital cafeteria. It was a challenge seeing clients, and trying to convey austere professionalism, all while sporting a shiner on my face. The makeup hid it some, but I felt self-conscious enough to leave my hair down and shift the part to cover that side of my face more.

Midway through my sandwich, sitting in the hospital cafeteria, I was aware of someone watching me. My pulse was racing, mouth tangy with adrenaline when I looked up. He was middle-aged, Asian, male, and was wearing blue scrubs and had a stethoscope around his neck. When our eyes met, he stood and started toward me unbidden. He walked stiffly, with determination, straight toward me. I made note of the exits in case I had to run. Guess being abducted had made me jumpier than I realized.

“I’m sorry to trouble you, my name is Dr. Chen, you are the resurrectionist, yes?” I swallowed the lump of subpar tuna salad in my mouth and nodded.

“Selene Shade.” I didn’t reach out to shake as the man’s nervous energy made me nervous.

“You mind if I sit?” I did. He saw my hesitation, “I just wanted to ask you a professional question, really quick, then you can get back to your lunch.” I wanted to say no, but I also didn’t want to make a scene. If he was a spell-slinger he could alter perception, so no one noticed me being dragged out, he could knock me out, he could kill me right there. He sat when I did not answer right away and leaned in as I leaned back. “Thanks,” he said quietly as if I had invited him after all.

“I’ve seen you here before, at the hospital, been trying to get up the nerve to talk to you.”

“I don’t mean to be rude, but my day is pretty packed,” I muttered, meeting his brown eyes. Dr. Chen was probably about forty, shorter than me with a thick head of black hair that had a few sprinkles of gray. He wore tortoise-shell glasses and had a smooth unwrinkled face. His aura looked human.

“I understand, I won’t take up much of your time, I promise. I have an odd question for you. Please.”

I put my sandwich on the cellophane and met his eyes, “That seems to be the only kind anyone has for me these days. Shoot.”

“Okay, I met a woman recently, through the hospital. She’s a volunteer, very beautiful, and very aloof. Blonde, pretty, out of my league.” He chuckled and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. “After a bit of back-and-forth flirting, she finally agreed to go out for a drink with me. She’s quiet, as I said. Mysterious. We’ve seen each other a few more times and I am falling for this girl.
